This was simply the start of Hubbard's trouble with the F.D.A. By July of 1957, even more than one hundred Scientology companies existed in the United States, and they were thriving. He began to issue plans railing against the "adversaries" of Scientology, specifying that the only way to deal with them was to strike even harder.( 11 ) Hubbard had actually been spending more and more time in Europe, this link and in the spring of 1959, he amazed his American fans with the purchase of a huge Georgian manor in East Grinstead, England, which was to become the new international headquarters of Scientology.
